PLANS FOR JANUARY, 2009 HANDS-ON PROJECT In January, 2009 Amigos de Guatemala will return to the Zacualpa area of Guatemala to participate in another hands-on project. Budget permitting we will build a new classroom at a rural primary school (La Vega I) and build new bathrooms at another rural school (La Vega II). Also we will fund the pavement of a patio/playground at another primary school (Turbala II) where we built new classrooms in January/February 2008. As in the past, Amigos de Guatemala will pay for the construction materials and the labor will be provided by Guatemalan and Rotary volunteers. Finally, we plan to have another Amigos de Guatemala dental clinic under the leadership of Drs Rick Holm and Mark Pratt. We plan to move our dental clinic further into the mountains so as to better serve the rural poor populations outside Zacualpa. Our travel itinerary will be similar to our January, 2007 & 08 project schedule. In sum, we will gather in Antigua, Guatemala. We will travel by vans to Zacualpa for a week of work. Finally, we will travel to Lake Atitlan (or some other relaxing destination) for a little R&R before returning to the USA. Members of partner Rotary Clubs and sponsors of students are welcome to join us in our hands-on projects. The dates of travel have not yet been determined. They will probably be in late January or early February. Please contact us as soon as possible about travel to Guatemala. Inclusion in the travel group will be on a "first-come first-served" basis. Any exceptions to this are based on the special needs of the project such as bilingual Rotarians and individuals who are sponsoring children in Guatemala through the Amigos de Guatemala program. We also will make an effort to have representation from as many partner clubs that have members interested in traveling to Guatemala.
