Amigos de Guatemala is a partnership of Rotary and other service clubs to provide quality humanitarian service projects in Guatemala. The program began in 2003 with the Groveland, CA Rotary Club building a school kitchen for a small Maya community (Jaibalito). What Groveland Rotary began required the support and partnership of other Rotary clubs to continue.
In 2004 Amigos de Guatemala began to focus the majority of their services in the area of Zacualpa, Guatemala. Because this area does not have a Rotary club we partner with the Association for Development in Zacualpa non-governmental organization - ADIZ-NGO. ADIZ president (Fredy Argueta) and staff have been dependable, honest and professional in all their partnership responsibilities with Amigos de Guatemala. Since 2004 Amigos de Guatemala has completed over 20 major projects in the area of Zacualpa, Guatemala.
Included in these projects is a scholarship/sponsorship program for secondary education students. Guatemala public education ends in the 6th grade. Junior and senior high school students must pay to attend school. Most of the rural Maya families in the Zacualpa area cannot afford the cost of registration, tuition, school uniforms, school supplies and transportation. You can help by sponsoring one of these students.
We are searching for compassionate persons willing to help a Guatemalan student continue his/her education. We respectfully request that you seriously consider sponsoring a student.
The cost of a full junior high school (Basico) sponsorship for one year is $400 ($40 a month for a ten month school year).
The cost of a full high school (Diversificado) sponsorship for one year is $800 ($80 a month for a ten month school year.
You may be interested in sponsoring a student in a child's or grandchild's name. You can also sponsor a student in the name of a local junior or senior high program such as an Interact or Spanish Club.
All sponsored students are closely supervised by the ADIZ-NGO staff and will communicate with their sponsors on a regular basis regarding their education, personal, family, and community life. Sponsors will have their lives enriched by exchanging communication with these students.
