Hands-on projects
Amigos de Guatemala has two primary projects - "hands-on" (direct service) school improvement projects and a scholarship/sponsorship program. Our hands-on projects involve the construction and repair of school and community facilities. The program began with the Groveland, CA Rotary Club building a school kitchen for a small Mayan community (Jaibalito) on Lake Atitlan. In 2004 Amigos de Guatemala began to focus the majority of their services in the area surrounding Zacualpa, Guatemala. Beginning January, 2005 groups of Rotarians from the partnership clubs have traveled to Guatemala to work with local volunteers on the hands-on projects. These direct service projects are a fantastic cross-cultural experience for all who participate. One benefit of being a member of a partner club is the opportunity for members to participate in these projects.
