Jaibalito School Kitchen Project

Jaibalito is a small Mayan community on Lake Atitlan.  Some refer to Jaibalito as "poverty in paradise" because the Lake is so beautiful and the village is so poor.  The only way to reach the village is by a very long foot path or by boat.  For many of the children the hot meal they receive at the school is the most nutritious meal they have all day.  The school needed a kitchen to qualify for food and a place to prepare and serve the food.

With the help of the owners of a small tourist lodge (Vulcano Lodge) in Jaibalito and the members of Groveland, CA Rotary Club, Amigos de Guatemala was able to build a kitchen with running water, a wood stove, and a secure storage area for the food.  We are very grateful for the generosity of Groveland Rotary members and the help of the owners of Vulcano Lodge (Terje and Monica Maeland) for the support and services on this project.  The kitchen was completed in October, 2004 and dedicated in January, 2005.

Additionally, a Rotary Foundation major matching grant furnished the kitchen with storage cabinets and school supplies and book bags for the children.
