Chichicastenango was an important Kaqchiquel trading town long before the Spanish conquest.  Villagers walk for hours to get their wares to Chichi.  On Thursday and Sunday they spread  out their vegetables, fruits, chunks of chalk, balls of was, etc. and wait for customers.  Also, more tourist wares are sold in the more permanent stores.  It is a hectic blend of the old and the more "modern" - the tourist trade and the traditional local to local trade.

On the way to Zacualpa we stop in Chichi to experience a bit of the Sunday market.
