Across the lake from Panajachel is the very interesting, colorful, and historic city of Santiago.  The men in Santiago still dress in traditional clothing with their "fancy pants" in contrast to much of Guatemala where the men where western clothing.

Santiago is a great place to shop for art work, wood carving, and weaving.

Santiago is also the site of a city wide protest that was the beginning of the end of the civil war.  The monument to the left is in remembrance of the many Maya from Santiago that lost their life in the war.

This area is also the place where 400 people were buried alive by a mud/rock slide in October, 2005.

Santiago is a "must see" for anyone visiting Lake Atitlan including the boat ride.  Warning, the lake can get very windy so take the larger boat across the lake.
